Blogging Tips For An Aspiring Writer

Hi guys, I have had a very special request from one of my readers. This is the question that I got asked:

Q. Superb blog! Do you have any hints for aspiring writers? I’m hoping to start my own blog soon but I’m a little lost on everything. Would you suggest starting with a free platform like WordPress or go for a paid option? There are so many choices out there that I’m completely confused .. Any suggestions? Kudos!

A. Thank you for that great question and for thinking that I was the best person to answer it.

Firstly I would suggest using WordPress, especially when you are new to the process of blogging. WordPress offers a lot of support through their blog, support forums where you can ask and answer questions with other users, and they offer a step to step tutorial when you first come onto the dashboard.

There are quite a few other website that you can choose form like typepad and blogger. The only think about typepad is that there is a small fee but it is still very good. One of my favorite websites that uses typepad is called A Beautiful Mess, they have grown massively over the years that they have been using it, and has really helped them out with their store. It is entirely up to you, if you don’t mind paying. I guess both of the websites are smiler except with typepad you can add adverts and plugins, and because of WordPress’s safety laws, you can’t. It’s just deciding what you want and where to go with your site.

If you want something a little less complex you can use OnSugar. I wouldn’t recommend it, but it’s a start.

Before you do your first post, it’s best to get to know your site and all that it can do. Knowing the tools that you are going to be using on a daily or weekly basis will make it easier and quicker for you to navigate and understand your site.

Once this is done, you can create your first post.

Your blog is not suppossed to be based entirely on what people want to read, but on what you want them to read. If people want to read about food, and you want to tell them about science, then tell them about science. There is bound to be someone out there who wants to target the people who want to read about food, and that is something that they want to type about.

You shouldn’t feel pressured to type about what you know people want to read, and overload yourself with different topics. Choose the top 5 or top 3 things that you love the most, and come up with smart and fun ways to get your message out there. Being different to everyone else is the best way to attract an audience, they are going to want to hear what you have to say.

Also don’t feel pressured to write everyday. Some of the best blogs I know only post a few days a week. This is because they focus on the quality of their posts, and not the quantaty.

I know that the going may seem tough for the first couple of weeks/months. It seems very difficult to grow your audience. I had this. I started my first blog 4 momths ago and I only got 4 followers. Ii was so upset because they barely read the blog. I was working hard trying to post everyday and really getting myself down. Then I started 3 other blogs and found them all hard to balance. I was trying to different topics all at once, that’s why I formed this blog by merging the 3 together. I couldn’t cope with them all being all over the place.

Within 3 days of forming this blog, I got 14 hits. A few days later 20. and it grew very quickly. Now I have over 200 hits (altogether), but it’s a steady process. I’m still looking for new things I can add to be different and trying to make sure I post everyday.

It’s good to be dedicated. But remember that even though having people read your blog daily is a reward in itself, you are writing for yourself too. You should only write the stuff that you would like to read, then you can make it more interesting for yourself, and this will make it more interesting for readers that share the same views as you.

Put your own spin on things and it will grow, Grow, GROW.

3 other ways for helping your blog to grow is by:

  1. Making it social network friendly so that people can connect it to their profiles and share any of the information.
  2. Adding polls so that people can respond to the posts that you do. (Read my post on What’s Your Favourite Breakfast?) for an idea of what I mean.)
  3. Ask questions on your blog so that readers are encouraged to respond. Also reply to every single comment you get. You must remember that it is them taking the time and effort to stop what their doing to add something. You should be very polite and grateful because it’s their time and not yours.

Just have fun with it and enjoy the experience. Reading other peoples blogs and leaving comments is also a good way of getting your blog known, and also reading helps you to broaden your vocabulary.

I hope this helped and answered your question and I think I’ll be writing more tips in the future. If you need any further help or have any other questions, you can contact me by leaving a comment, or you can use WordPress support by clicking the help button below your profile to find out more.

Thank you for reading, and I hope this helped.

I hope your blog is successful, and please give me the website address when it’s done so I can check it out!! Thank you, From Nadine 😀
