Whole Grains and The Brain

Barley is a major animal feed crop.

Add Avocados and Whole Grains

advocado

Eating whole grains and fruits such as avocado can reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and lower bad cholesterol. This helps to reduce the risk of plaque buildup which is helpful because every organ in the body depends on blood low, especially the heart and brain. Eating these foods can offer a tasty but simple way to fire up brain cells which is what everybody wants :).

Avocados have good monounsaturated fats in it that contributes to healthy blood flow.

As well as helping your brain, eating whole grains like popcorn and whole wheat contributes to your vitamin E and dietary fibre intake. And if that wasn’t enough, popcorn is also said to be a lot healthier than a packet of crisps- so feel free to dig in with no shame!

Fish, A Source of Protein

English: Atlantic salmon. Salmo salar.

Fish is a Brain Food

Fish is rich in omega 3 fatty acids, is a protein source, and is essential for brain function and development.

These healthy fish fats have amazing brain power and is also good for your heart.

If you want to have good heart and brain health then I would suggest having two servings of fish a week.

Did you Know That…

Higher dietary omega 3 fatty acids are linked to lower dementia and stroke risks; slower mental decline; and may play a vital role in enhancing memory, especially as we get older?

Break-The-Fast

Breakfast - By the time I got around to eating...

Breakfast is good. Breakfast is important. Part 4 of the Brain Foods Series is obviously going to be about… well I’ll let you figure that out 🙂

As your parents may have said (everyday of your life (I’m exaggerating) but at least more than once in your life) that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It’s true. Studies have shown that eating breakfast can improve short-term memory and attention.

If you’re a student it is important that you eat breakfast as you will perform better throughout your working day than those who don’t.

Food that will help your brain fuel include:

  • High-fiber whole grains
  • Dairy (for those who aren’t lactose and tolerant)
  • Fruit

I don’t eat dairy so I usually have a bowl of muesli with soya milk topped with raisins. It’s the best!

High-calorie breakfasts though are not a wise idea because researchers have found that it hinders concentration.

I hope this helped and encourages you to set aside time to eat breakfast in the morning instead of rushing out because you’re late for school or work 🙂

Stay tuned for more from this series. Your brain will thank you!

Sugar Can Be Good?

Français : Echantillons de différents sucres, ...

The second part of the brain food series is all about sugar. Your body metabolizes glucose that it gets from the sugars and the carbs that you eat. Having a something sweet to eat or drink can offer a short-term boost to memory, thinking processes, and mental ability.

Obviously with every good thing, there comes a price, Having too much sugar can not be good and is not good. Even table sugar is not good. The reasons are:

  1. It can impair your memory
  2. It can impair the rest of your body
  3. It can help you put on weight

You have to be really careful in making sure that your sugar intake is reasonable. This also means that there is a time to have chocolate and cake and a time to have your 5-a-day 🙂 (Sorry everyone!)

Whilst we are on the subject of 5-a-day I read that you are actually supposed to have 9-a-day or more. Why should there be a limit to how much fruit and vegetable you should have? Obviously there is a limit but our body requires more than the government said that we need. This is fact!

Also remember that when eating fruit you are not to eat it before you go to sleep because this will keep your stomach working all through the night. I think that I will do a timetable on what meals would be good to eat throughout the say so that you can get some ideas for what your body needs.

I hope all this information is useful and I hope you all get a good nights sleep. From Nadine

Brain Foods Series

Hello All or Good Afternoon!

Today I was checking my emails (as per usual) and saw a few from WebMD. I decided that I would take some of the information that I found there and create a mini-series. It is entitled Brain Food because I am going to share different foods that are good for your brain (Like you probably already guessed.) I am also going to throw some of my own tips into the mix so that if you do visit the website to read it, you won’t think that I have just copied everything from there and put it onto here In my own words.

1#: Brain Foods That Help You Concentrate

First let’s start with a pretty simple question,

English: A photo of a cup of coffee. Esperanto...

Whilst caffeine can be harmful it has a benefit. it can make you more alert. It is used to energize and help you to focus sand concentrate.

Caffeine can be found in things like chocolate, some medications and obvious things like coffee and energy drinks.

The effects of caffeine is short-term and used to wake you up in the mornings and when you are falling asleep when you are supposed to be working (someone knows what I am talking about!)

I am not trying to sell the idea that caffeine is acceptable seeing as I don’t drink coffee or tea. So for those who do not do so already I wouldn’t advise you to start just because it is addictive. If you already do drink tea and coffee, please drink it in moderation because this will make you feel jittery and uncomfortable.
I hope this helped!
Stay tuned for more on this series.

Time To Hear

Hi everyone!

Yesterday I was s checking my emails and I came across this lovely one. I thought that I would share it with you because I believe that God should come first everyday and that we should look after our bodies. I hope that you enjoy it and that it helps you with your daily walk with god 🙂

Today’s Prayer
Dear Father in Heaven, praise be to your name in all the earth! Thank you for the years of good health you have given, and for walking me through the times when I have been ill or faced physical problems. I pray that I, and every Christian, will always be mindful of the fact that our bodies are the temples of the Holy Spirit. We want to keep ourselves clean, pure, and as healthy as possible, for we need to be good examples and have good testimonies before others. We need to honor you and your Spirit through our bodies, as well as our minds and actions. Please give us wisdom and knowledge of right things to eat, the right ways to exercise, and motivate us to do what we must to stay in shape and be healthy. So often we get busy and have so much to do, that we do not make time to take care of our physical bodies. Open the door, give us the desire, and show us the way. May we take care of what you have given us. In the name of the Savior I pray, amen.

Time to Hear
TGIF Today God Is First Volume 1, by Os Hillman

“He who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I too will love him and show Myself to him.” – John 14:21b

We live in a day of 12-step programs for this, four points to success for that, and all forms of programmed means of becoming successful. Have you ever wondered how you can guarantee a greater revelation of Jesus in your life? Jesus tells us how this can be done. It is all tied to obedience. In John, He tells us the following: “Whoever has My commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves Me. He who loves Me will be loved by My Father, and I too will love him and show Myself to him” (Jn. 14:21). The key here is in the last three words. He will show Himself to us because of our loving Him through our obedience. The more obedient we become, the more revelation of His presence we will feel in our life. Jeremiah tells us, “Call to Me and I will answer you and tell you great and unsearchable things you do not know” (Jer. 33:3).

Many Christians wonder why they cannot hear or sense God’s presence in their life. It is because they do not seek Him with a whole heart, and they are not obedient to the things He has asked. God does not show us the next move until we are obedient to the first thing He has spoken to us. It is a progressive process. He entrusts the small things to us first, then moves us to the larger. I was like many today who are so focused on seeking the activity of God rather than seeking God Himself. Hebrews tells us that God rewards those who diligently seek Him. In the Old Testament we are told, “But if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find Him if you look for Him with all your heart and with all your soul” (Deut. 4:29).

I realized if I was going to hear God’s voice, I had to make time to seek Him and hear Him. I had to spend focused time alone reading, studying, and seeking His face only. Jesus set the model for this when He often left the crowds to be alone and seek His heavenly Father. I also had to tune my “radio” to His frequency. Static comes into that frequency when I am disobedient. My level of seeking determines the power of my “radio” to reach Him. The more I seek Him, the more I hear Him. Seek the Lord today so that you may be empowered by His presence.

Remember I Was Telling You About The Sparkling Water?

Well today I was reading the newspapers and I read something even more shocking than the sugar! This is the words that the journalist (Nadia Gilani) used:

FIZZY drinks and fruit squashes are being linked to depression in a study involving more than 250,000 people. Downing four cans of sparkling drinks a day raised the risk of mental illness by 30 per cent, while the same amount of squash increased it by 38 per cent, researchers said.’Quote From Nadespink

I was so shocked when I read it and was also very thankful that it made me feel very sick. I am definitely going to be watching what goes into my poor little body and try to be as healthy as God intended me to be by eating the right foods, and most definitely drinking the right drinks.

Life Is Sweet Reblog By Street Meets style

Today has been a sweet day. I will explain more about why in a minute but for now I wanted to show you a few images of my picture so far. It’s been a slow start for me but I thought that it was unfair for you to be waiting for the finished piece when I’m taking too long to even get to that stage. I will get there eventually after I stop coming up with more ideas and brainstorming. :) Here are the images along with a project that I am currently doing:A Sneak Peak My Picture

Here are a few images of my Pirate project for college:Purple FeltArrrh Pirate FlagI Made FeltA Friendly Pirate

Now I am going to explain why my day was sweet. Recently I purchased 4 bottles of Sainsbury’s sparkling flavored water (my favorite) until I found out some shocking news that would put me off it forever…Sparkling Blackcurrant And CherryMore Sparkling Water

Apparently it contains SUGAR!! I know that this isn’t very extreme or anything that would upset anyone, but it put me off drinking the rest. I started to feel really sick and had to throw them all away. There’s me thinking that I am doing myself a favor by drinking loads of sparkly flavored water, and it turns out I’m doing myself more damage.

The reason I was sick is because the last time I went to my friends house to have fish and chips I made a huge mistake when looking for the alt. I just saw something white in a bowl with a spoon in it and sprinkled it on my plate only to find out that it was sugar. Ever since that day I have been put off from having sugar in or on anything.

So please, don’t make the same mistakes that I did… no really, please don’t. I’d rather have sugar in chocolate or in something healthier life vegetables or something.

Even though that was one down side to my day I can still say that Life is good, and most definitely SWEET :)

Have a lovely evening,

A Selectioin Of Fruits

A selection of fruits goes a long way, not only for your health, but for your voice.

Your voice is very delicate, and sugary treats really doesn’t do it or your body any good.

Fortunately for us, God gave us fruits. Nature’s own sweets. It is helpful for digestion and for killing germs in the body because if the acid. This acid also breaks down the mucous in your throat, helping your voice to sound more melodious and clear.

Please do take time to look after your voice, because if we can’t hear you or you can’t speak properly, it doesn’t really help anybody. And it’s quite painful to have a sore throat 🙂 We only get one so please look after it.

Thank you, and I’m sorry for not posting recently. I have had LOTS of homework. But it’s almost half term!! So I can post more.. hopefully. 🙂

Until then, happy reading and please check out my other blog streetmeetsstyle.wordpress.com 🙂 thank you, from Nadine.

(This picture is something I found from Google. It looked really nice so I saved it 🙂 is that a crime?… guilty. But I love fruit 😀 )

Beauty Starts From The Inside

In order to look beautiful on the outside, it should start within. Drinking plenty of water (8 glasses a day or one small cup every hour), eating healthily (to avoid the buildup of toxins) and getting plenty of sleep a day, are the correct attitudes to beauty and well-being.
